Ironwood is a mid-sized native understory tree that tolerates all soil and sun conditions from full sun to shade and can survive drought once established. It is a good choice under power lines. It is often called hop-hornbeam because the male flowers resemble the hops used in brewing. The wood is dense and very hard. It is a slow grower but is disease resistant and low maintenance with golden yellow fall foliage and winter interest.
